News from the Spur-of-the-Moment Shakespeare Company is always welcome, and we have word of a new project. You’ll remember that we first noted SMS when they were performing short scenes from Shakespeare in the Toronto subway. Since then, they’ve been fulfilling their mission to bring Shakespeare to people who can’t get to the theater with a program called “Shakespeare’s Briefs”:
Over the past year we have been running a recreational therapy program aiming to make Shakespeare accessible to those who cannot physically attend the theatre, entitled, Shakespeare’s Briefs. We provided performances for over 1000 patients and clients and visited 14 wards, 10 hospitals, and 3 senior residences. Some of our past clients include SickKids, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto General Hospital, and the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health (CAMH).
Now SMS is getting ready for a new season of Shakespeare’s Briefs and has turned to fundraising on IndieGoGo:
This program is set to continue through this year in two sessions. The first session will begin May 1st and end June 30th. The second session will begin October 28thand end December 21st. We are currently fundraising for our first session!
I’ve long thought a Kickstarter-like campaign would be ideal for SMS and now that they’re trying it I’m proud to urge you to contribute. These are young actors who’ve decided to do good while providing a structure in which they can support each other. Even if you’re not in the Toronto area, check out their website and support Shakespeare everywhere. OccupyShakespeare, anybody?
